Oooh, good question! Hard question, but good question!!
With Jamaican Ska, I adore Prince Buster, numbers composed by Baba Brooks, Don Drummond, and Roland Alphonso. Rocksteady is by far my favorite era and Slim Smith, Alton Ellis, Phyllis Dillon, and Patsy Todd are my favorite singers. Lynn Taitt is probably my favorite overall musician in that era as well.
My favorite Jamaican producers are Justin Yap, Sonia Pottinger, Coxsone Dodd, and Lee Perry.
Two-Tone, my favorites are The Specials, The Selecter, and The Bodysnatchers.
Modern day traditional ska/rocksteady/reggae - I love The Slackers, The PepperPots (although they mostly do soul, they are fantastic), The Aggrolites, The Dreamlets, The Caroloregians, The Debonaires, Los Granadians, Hepcat, Green Room Rockers, The Upsessions, and of course, I have to say my boyfriend’s band, The Prizefighters….Not because I feel obligated to, but simply because they are incredibly talented, detail-oriented, and understand Jamaican Music and all the genres that influence older Jamaican Music inside and out.
Third wave - I don’t listen to much third wave and I haven’t since I got into the older Jamaican sound when I was about 15, but good third wave holds a special place in my heart! Most of it sounds so much alike to me, I can’t tell the bands apart…Anyway, MU330, Skankin’ Pickle, Bim Skala Bim, Slow Gherkin, and several other asian man records ska punk bands.
Thanks for the ask! Really took some brain-wracking!
